Hana Hammond

Sport and Physical Education

Graduated 2024

Hi! I'm Hana. I studied BA (Hons) Sport and Physical Education at BNU from 2021 to 2024. Now, as a SEN and neurodiversity advocate with personal experience of Autism and ADHD, I prove that success is possible for everyone. I work in a school supporting children and teaching, building experience to become a SEN PE teacher.

What are your memories of being a student at BNU?

Joining Bucks Swimming made me feel accepted. Social mixers, Freshers Week, friendships which brought laughter, and the support I received was incredible.

What advice could you give to recent graduates who want to get ahead?

Take small steps and prioritize your mental health. Trust yourself and follow your passion—you know your capabilities best.

Wearing your hat and gown at graduation may be the only time you get to wear it, so make the most of it and celebrate well!

How did your degree at BNU impact on your career?

My degree provided the foundation to apply the necessary skills, knowledge, and techniques to teach PE and sporting activities, preparing me for my first roles working with children in a school setting. This experience continues to help me work toward my goal of becoming a SEN PE teacher.

Why did you join the course?

I joined the course because I wanted to help young people through my passion for sport and education.

What aspects of your studies did you enjoy the most and why?

I enjoyed my dissertation because I was interested in the topic. It felt good to contribute something to help PE teachers in SEN PE. I was proud of it!

Which parts of your student experience were the best preparation for your job?

Earning my level 2 coaching qualification through a module greatly improved my leadership skills.

Researching SEN pupil inclusion in PE deepened my empathy for teachers and pupils in special schools.

Being a student rep during my first year gave me the opportunity to be the voice of all sports students.

What are your future ambitions?

I aim to become a SEN PE teacher and continue advocating for neurodivergent people.

What advice would you give to a student considering the course or looking to get into a career in your sector?

Get a diverse school experience, especially in PE or sports coaching in general. If possible, work in a school during your studies to deepen your understanding.
