Nathan Jopp

BSc (Hons) Sports Development and Coaching

Graduated 2022

I studied Sports Development and Coaching at Bucks New University, graduating in 2022. Since leaving BNU, I have built a career supporting young people through sport, beginning in community football before progressing into elite football. I worked as a Health and Inclusion Officer at Wycombe Wanderers Foundation and later moved into Academy Player Care at Watford FC, supporting players from under 9s through to under 21s. I am now joining Tottenham Hotspur as an Academy Schoolboy Player Care Officer.

What are your memories of being a student at BNU?

My memories of BNU are very positive. The course was supportive, practical, and closely linked to the real world of sport. Lecturers encouraged discussion, reflection, and personal responsibility, with a strong focus on preparing students for the standards and expectations of the industry. I also loved being in the boxing society!

What advice could you give to recent graduates who want to get ahead?

Be proactive and take responsibility for your own development. Seek opportunities, gain experience alongside your studies, and do not be afraid to start at grassroots or voluntary roles. In sport, your attitude, professionalism, and willingness to learn often matter just as much as qualifications.

How did your degree at BNU impact on your career?

My degree helped me build a strong understanding of the standards, professionalism, and level of commitment required to work in elite sport. It challenged me to think critically, communicate effectively, and take ownership of my development. Applying learning to real world contexts helped prepare me for the pace, expectations, and demands of professional environments.

Why did you join the course?

I joined the course because I wanted a career in sport that went beyond coaching alone. The Sports Development and Coaching course offered a broader understanding of how sport operates within communities and high performance environments, which aligned closely with my interests and values.

What aspects of your studies did you enjoy the most and why?

I enjoyed the practical elements of the course and the strong encouragement to gain industry experience alongside my studies. The course pushed students to be proactive, seek opportunities, and apply learning in real world settings, which helped prepare me for life after university.

Which parts of your student experience were the best preparation for your job?

The emphasis on gaining industry experience, reflective practice, group work, and presentations was the best preparation for my career. Being encouraged to build experience outside of lectures helped me develop confidence, professionalism, and communication skills that are essential in elite sporting environments.

What are your major careers milestones since completing your studies?

Key milestones include working as a Health and Inclusion Officer at Wycombe Wanderers Foundation, progressing into elite football at Watford FC Academy as an Academy Player Care and Safeguarding Officer supporting players from under 9s through to under 21s, and now taking the next step by joining Tottenham Hotspur Academy in a player care role.

What are your future ambitions?

My ambition is to continue developing within elite football, focusing on holistic player support, wellbeing, and transitions. Long term, I would like to contribute to shaping best practice within player care and supporting young people to succeed both within and beyond football.

What advice would you give to a student considering the course or looking to get into a career in your sector?

Be open minded about where your journey might take you and focus on developing skills that allow you to work effectively with people. Take every opportunity to gain experience, build relationships, and learn from others. Progression is not always linear, but every experience helps build readiness for the next step.
